What is power kiting?
We all know the image of the small child running around a field with a kite flapping and sometimes flying behind him. But power kiting is quite the opposite, power kiting is an extreme sport. Power kites are large kites capable of creating a large amount of pull and vertical lift in the right conditions. These kites have enough power to drag the flyer around on their feet, or more often than not, face flat on the floor. They can even lift the flyer of their feet and into the air!
Pulling Power
Power kites can also be used to pull buggys. These are typically three whiled carts (these also come in two and four wheeled variations) that the flyer sits in flying the kite with his hands and steering with his feet. In fact you can use a power kite to pull anything you can steer with your feet. For more information on buggying take a look at the Power Kite Shops how to.
Size Variations
The size of power kites varies greatly depending on the wind conditions you fly them in, and what surface your flying them on (They fly on water too, kite surfing). I own a 3 meter power kite which is more than enough to pull me off my feet and into the air. However kites are produced in sizes up to and exceeding 15 meters. These large kites are generally flown in lighter winds or even no wind. Flying a kite this large in strong winds would generate to much lateral pull for the pilot to effectively control.
Where can I get a power kite?
There a number of internet based Kite Shops that provide a good, reliable service. Bellow I have listed the on line shops that I have experience in dealing with.
